The Reality of School Resumption in Mbengwi

Classes have resumed in many schools in Mbengwi, chief town of Momo division in the N.W region of Cameroon for the 2021/2022 academic year. The divisional administration toured various educational establishments within Mbengwi central on Tuesday September 7 2021 to ascertain the level of resumption.

A very clean entrance and lawns welcomed the convoy to the campus of Government Bilingual High School (G.B.H.S) Mbengwi depicting its readiness. Just from the gate, a refurbished sign board planted by the roadside stood out clear to catch every eye that passed by, insinuating the old is gone, the new has come. In the classrooms, teachers and students had answered present for the effective commencement of the teaching and learning process.

Speaking to Mbengwi Online, Mr. Ngasoh William, the principal said "I am satisfied and it is promising. The students are very excited,  they want to come back to school, they want to learn, why not give them a chance? You know, in this our age, the worst crime a parent can commit is to keep the child uneducated." He confirmed that about one hundred students filled the classrooms on the first day of resumption and the teachers too began teaching immediately. Talking about the boarding section of the school, he said "The boarding house is going to be fully functional and if I'm not mistaken, it's going to be very modest and the best as compared to any other boarding school we have around here."

At Blessed Fountain Nursery and Primary School Mile 17, hundreds of pupils and kindergartens showed up for day one of school resumption. Madam Foncham Beatrice, the proprietress confirmed everything was in order. At Christ the King Catholic Nursery and Primary School Mile 18, it was the same success story of effective resumption

Because of the ongoing Anglophone Crisis and to meet up with changing times since tough challenges require tough solutions, some mission and government schools have temporarily rescheduled the holding of classes in other structures within the central town of the municipality, away from the original school sites because of their remoteness and for the convenience sake of parents, pupils and teachers. Such has been the case with Saint Joseph's Catholic Comprehensive College that has moved from Gunefun, an outskirt locality in G.R.A towards Bessi Fomukong to the catholic mission premises, behind the Mbengwi District Hospital.

Before, it was a purely boarding school but now, it's been temporarily transformed into a purely day school and brought to the centre of the town to shorten the distance for students and teachers. As a call to parents and students still lagging behind, Fombo Alfred, the Vice Principal of the school said "I know there are some still hanging, waiting to hear information on whether or not Saint Joseph has started effectively. Let them know that lessons are going on and the teachers are in class. It's a great start for us."

At Government Practicing School (G.P.S) Group I & II in G.R.A, no single pupil showed up on this first day of resumption. Rather, hundreds of teachers drawn from the basic education family in the entire subdivision were the ones that rallied here to receive the Senior Divisional Officer and entourage. In addressing, them, the divisional boss told them that his interest isn't in sanctioning those who keep collecting state money as monthly salary yet do no work, but rather to encourage those that are doing their  job considering that Momo division occupied the first position in First School Leaving Certificate results and second in Common Entrance examination results in the the entire region last academic year. He further indicted the teachers for not doing their best to have pupils on campus considering that all of them are parents, directly or indirectly. "This is our main school in Mbengwi town. So, we should have children receiving their education here." he insisted.

Before leaving from here to continue the tour, the teachers were notified that the eyes of the administration are on this particular school. Located not far away from his office, he promised to be paying surprise visits to the campus anytime he feels as to, to take stock of daily routines there with special attention on teachers not showing up for their lessons. From here, the convoy took a speedy ride to the campus of Palmers Bilingual Nursery and Primary School where lots of innovations had been done and classes went on smoothly. Not far from Palmers is SAR/SM, both located near the Mbengwi council building.

Delegation on Tour

Government Rural Artisan and Home Economics Training Centre otherwise known as SAR/SM Mbengwi is today hosting all the technical colleges in the subdivision, a measure implored by the (educational) hierarchy  of the division to overcome the challenge of inaccessibility of teachers and students to the hinterlands where these government school structures exist, said to be infested by non state armed fighters otherwise known as "Amba Boys" who have for long stood against the functioning of government schools. Students of Government Technical College (G.T.C) Tugi, Njah-Etu, Ngyen-Mbo, Zang Tabi and Government Technical High School (G.T.H.S) Mbengwi, whose site is in Njindom now have SAR/SM as temporal site for the holding of their classes. Some of these technical colleges (some secondary schools inclusive) have just a student, others two, three or four per class or as total enrolment for now and teachers have been asked to go on with their lessons irrespective of the number and to report on campus everyday they are supposed to teach, according to the time table even if there's no student.

Mbengwi Online noticed a disturbing situation that needs urgent redress on the campus of SAR/SM. In some classrooms, two separate classes go on simultaneously and not even a plywood is used to separate the students. They simply seat and back the other, each focusing on their teacher and blackboard to get the lesson being taught, a situation that is in no way apt for the teaching and learning process. Mr. Liwa Michael, the director of SAR/SM Mbengwi informed the visiting delegation that following the calendar of the Ministry of Employment and Vocational Training under which the school falls, their own official  resumption date is still ahead but to avoid the various technical colleges being hosted on their campus to "capture" their students, they've decided to also resume with classes immediately to consolidate their students.

The tour ended at Presbyterian High School (P.H.S) Mbengwi where there were also hundreds of students in class. At every stop, the S.D.O encouraged the teachers, students and pupils, giving them assurances that just as the last academic year successfully went on in the division hitch free, so too will this new one be and even better. He also insisted that the flag of Cameroon must be seen flying on every campus every school day, raised in the morning and brought down at closing time. He further took a commitment with examination class students that by the time end of course examination results like Common Entrance, GCE O/A Levels etc shall be published, nothing short of 100% should be the target.

Mr. Tangoh Humphrey is the Momo divisional delegate of secondary education. After having monitored the situation on the ground on day one, alongside his colleague of basic education, he gave his reaction to Mbengwi Online in the following words, "Unlike last year, it is quite encouraging and we think that the days ahead are going to be better. As at today, we had 523 students who answered present. Schools are effectively on and so we are encouraging each and everyone especially parents who thought that schools were not going to be functional in Mbengwi that they should shun fear and send the children. The teachers are ready and everything is set for us to give the children their much needed education." This figure, Mbengwi Online notes, is in no way a real reflection of the general situation in the entire subdivision on the first day of resumption but rather the total enrollment of just the schools visited. There were other functional schools in Mbengwi central and many in the various villages that make up the Meta clan that weren't visited but whose number can't be disregarded.

And so, taking into consideration the rest of functional primary and nursery school in places like Munam, Nyen, Sang, Njindom, Wumnemburg, Wumnebit, Bome, Guneku, Mbemi, Tugi, Acha, Njah-Etu, Zang Tabi, Kai, Nyen, Fringyeng, Mbengeghang etc, Mbengwi Online estimates that about 1000 pupils and students were in school on the first day of resumption of classes for the 2021/2022 academic year. Talking about teachers who may want to continue playing hide and seek with the administration by showing up only on the day of resumption just to later disappear, abandoning the students to themselves, the divisional boss for secondary education said "We cannot afford not to teach the children and so all hands have to be put on deck without exception to make sure that the children are taught. So, for those teachers who think that they can play around and go away with it, I want to assure them that the time for play is over"

Operating in the context of the ongoing Anglophone Crisis, causing some parents to still be very much concerned about the security of their children, Fouda Etaba Bernoit Nicaise, the Senior Divisional Officer for Momo division reaffirmed the commitment of the state to ensure everyone's security is guaranteed. Speaking to Mbengwi Online, he said "As I used to say, security is a collective effort. Parents are involved, teachers, traditional rulers, municipal authorities, everybody. We have a special security plan that's ongoing and I can assure all that measures which can't be unveiled have been taken." As a word to doubting Thomases still holding the view that schools will not function effectively in Mbengwi this year, he added that "After many preparatory meetings and sensitisation campaigns, we are still calling them to join the train, to catch up with other parents that are already committed, that have already sent their children to school and you can bear with me that these children are happy being in the classrooms."

The situation of school resumption in Mbengwi this new academic year is thus very encouraging compared to last year. Some schools that remained shut since the crisis started have now reopened their doors. New schools have also seen the light of day as announcements are repeatedly being made in churches, online, on radio and posters for pupils and students to get enrolled. Mbengwi that used to be an academic hub is speedily regaining it's good old days. At press time, statistics on the level of resumption in the four other subdivisions, that is, Batibo, Widikum, Njikwa and Ngie were still being awaited. Until all the figures would've been combined, taking into consideration other schools that would've not been counted that the real situation of school resumption in the entire Momo division will be known.

Back to School 2021 in Mbengwi, Imprimerie Mondiale Arms Mbemi Kids with Weapons of Education

As the days are dying down to minutes, minutes to seconds, parents are negotiating the last bends to ensure their children effectively get back to school for the 2021/2022 academic year. The anglophone crisis is still plaguing many parts of the NW/SW regions of Cameroon, Mbengwi inclusive. However, there's always reign a relative level of calmness in Momo's divisional chief town throughout this period of sociopolitical and economic instability.

The back to school fever in Mbengwi this year is gripping almost everyone. School bags, books and other materials have been stocked by many business persons for sale. The competition is stiff with proprietors, teachers now openly campaigning for pupils and students to come get enrolled in their educational establishments. In churches, announcements are made. On Rainbow Radio, adverts are played and interviews conducted. On the streets, flyers are being distributed to passersby, posters pasted on walls, poles and fences.

In some communities, their well to do sons and daughters have been taking steps to ensure the children aren't deprived of their basic right to education. One of such is Mbemi village where kids there were on Sunday September 5th 2021 armed with weapons of education like pens, pencils, rulers, exercise books and scholarships. The donation that came in from Mr. Anumu Nicholas, a business magnet in the city of Douala, proprietor of Imprimerie Mondiale  Ltd that hails from Mbemi is meant to reduce the burden on parents who may be limited financially to obtain such basic school needs for their kids. The distribution exercise took place in Presbyterian Church, Mbemi congregation after service.

Away from the school items, he also offered a financial package of one hundred thousand (100.000) FRS to support Presbyterian Church, Mbemi Congregation in constructing a balcony in the church. Statistics show that this isn't the first time Mr. Anumu Nicholas is supporting the church project financially. After receiving the cash envelop, the Congregational Chairperson on behalf of the Christians said "We thank him so very much wishing God blesses him more financially so that next time he continues to help not only us, but others too." Some three lucky pupils also received a scholarship envelop of twenty five thousand (25.000) FRS each to support them in going back to school with ease.

Madam Tassi Beatrice coordinated the handing over exercise. As a former elder and chairperson of Mbemi congregation, she testified the numerous good works Pa Anumu Nicholas of Imprimmerie Mondiale has continuously been doing not only for the church but the entire village. Hear her, "He took charge of the plastering of the church, he started the balcony to the level where it is now and being dissatisfied with it still not being completed, he's stepped in again with another financial package for work to continue. In fact, I can't say all. The works he's been doing are just too much. We pray God continues to give him the strength and more wisdom plus inspiration to continue catering for his mothers, fathers, children in the village."

It should be recalled that about two weeks before, Pa Anumu Nicholas also reached out to the kids of House of Hope Orphanage Ngyen-Mbo with bags of rice, salt, packs of toilet role, vegetable oil, hundreds of exercise books and other school materials plus a roll up and a cash envelop of fifty thousand (50.000) FRS. Another Surprise at House of Hope Orphanage as Eric Akuta Foundation Steps in from San Antonio, Texas

Ever since the release of an S.O.S video that went viral online in which the kids of House of Hope Orphanage, Ngyen-Mbo Mbengwi were seen begging for help, hardly have weeks gone by without individuals, families, groups, associations, churches and organisations stepping in to wipe away the children's tears through material and cash donations.

On Friday September 3rd 2021, it was the turn of U.S based Eric Akuta Foundation from the city of San Antonio in Texas to sow a seed in the lives of the over 50 children being brought up at the orphanage. Mr. Tembi Jacob, former principal of Government Bilingual High School Mbengwi and former Momo Divisional Delegate of Secondary Education, now on retirement led a delegation to House of Hope Orphanage Ngyen-Mbo at its Wumfi temporal site to execute the donation exercise on behalf of the Eric Akuta Foundation which he revealed stems from Christ Empire, a religious congregation also based in San Antonio with a mission that's not only spiritual but humanitarian too.

Addressing the children as they stood behind their food and material items, Mr. Tembi Jacob told them that "The foundation, founded and run by Dr. Eric Akuta and wife, Dr. Edna Akuta thought that orphans should neither sleep hungry nor go to school hungry. They heard about this orphanage and extended these gifts that we should bring them here." The items handed were 16 bags of rice, 16 cartons of soap, 8 cartons of maggi and 140 litres of vegetable oil (28 jugs of 5 litres each). The entire donation project from information gotten cost the foundation close to a million francs CFA.

Having received the goodies, Madam Ayaba Marvis, founder/matron of the orphanage couldn't hide her feelings of joy and satisfaction. In expression, she said, "I feel so fulfilled and proud because I have brothers and sisters who've heard my cry and are ready to sail in this ship with me across the sea to make these children grow up. I'm just a vessel with nothing." Talking a bit about the origin of House of Hope Orphanage Ngyen-Mbo said "It just came to my heart to gather these children because of my own life story, how I grew up. I gathered them, having nothing. So, all I have to do is to beg, reason why I sent that video out because it was difficult by then. Everybody was afraid to come to Mbengwi" She went on to thank God because the said video that was released has actually opened many doors of support for the children especially as many persons round the world now know of their existence.

She also thanked the Akuta's for their great help and support to the kids wishing their ministry, Christ Empire grows bigger and bigger. "Wherever this money has come from, may the good Lord multiply it a million folds. May their pockets never remain dry. May they always be happy. May peace reign in their generation. We are so grateful." These were the words of the matron as she ended her vote of thanks to the donors.

Tende Clara is the spokesperson of the orphans. She too just like the matron thanked the Eric Akuta foundation for their kind gesture over their lives. Hear her, "In fact, we lack words to express our gratitude to you. We are so grateful for the marvelous items you've provided for us and we pray that may the Almighty  God bless you and give you more open doors so that you may continue to support us in the nearest future. We are still begging for school fees and needs as we shall be going to school." Clara went on to wish the Akutas live long to see their children's children, thanking them for supporting the children of House of Hope Orphanage Ngyen-Mbo most especially in this period of crisis.

Dr. Eric Akuta is a son of the soil, precisely from Zang Tabi village. He's been in the U.S for years now, administering the word of God through his church, Christ Empire alongside the wife, Dr. Edna Akuta, a daughter of the soil too. The recent donation to House of Hope Orphanage Ngyen-Mbo is the maiden ground breaking humanitarian activity the foundation has carried out back home in Meta, Mbengwi, the birthplace of its foubders. Close sources to the Akutas have hinted Mbengwi Online that this is just the beginning as there are very high probabilities that in the nearest future, such humanitarian donations to various underprivileged persons will continue, cutting across various subdivisions of the North West region and beyond.

Back to School 2021 in Mbengwi: Tadercam Foundation Orphanage Equips Kids

As the last minute preparations are being made for the resumption of schools in Mbengwi this 2021/2022 academic year, Tadercam Foundation Orphanage has set the ball rolling in preparing kids materially to embrace the new school year. On Saturday August  28 2021, some 25 children of school going age being brought up by the orphanage were equipped with exercise books, pens, pencils, erasers, sharpeners, rulers etc according to their various classes.

The distribution exercise took place in the head office of the foundation located in between the Mbengwi old council building and old court. Tah Derick is the founder of Tadercam Foundation Orphanage. In addressing the guardians that brought the little ones, he encouraged all to learn to be one another's keeper contrary to what some people erroneously believe in, that anybody for himself. He told them that "Money has impact when used on people not assets. You can have everything in the world but if you can't make someone to smile, you're nothing."

Talking to Mbengwi Online on the reason for the donation, Derrick said "We want to give these children a permanent smile so that they grow to do same to others. Our desire is for people to develop the mind of always helping others around us, not necessarily orphans in whatever little way they can." Pa Abu Chick Lucas, a retired civil servant from Tugi village attended the event to contribute his own little quota for the proper upbringing of the children by donating a solar rechargeable shaving machine to the orphanage that shall from now henceforth be used to shave the children's hair till the day it gets bad. He also promised to do more as an individual and source for help from other well wishers through his connections.

Founded in 2014, Tadercam Foundation Orphanage finally got its legalisation documents to go operational in June 2021. The orphanage as at now has 35 children spread within several villages of the Meta clan, Mbengwi. The orphans for now are not being jointly housed in any particular building but rather being catered for in the respective homes where they live with guardians or relatives.

Back Mbon Bridge Made Passable at Last, Mayor Apologises for Delay

Back Mbon Bridge Made Passable at Last, Mayor Apologises for Delay

One of the projects that's got many road users in Mbengwi frowning at the council has been the construction of the Back Mbon bridge. Studied and executed during the mandate of out gone mayor Tebe Beatrice, work went on at snail pace but was finally completed by December 2020, yet the bridge remained impassable because the two ends had to be filled with soil before cars, bikes and pedestrians could start crossing on it.

Back Mbon Bridge Now

Back Mbon Bridge Before

Surprisingly, it was at this level that work on the bridge was abandoned. For over 7 months, nothing crossed on it because of the two unfilled ends. The population questioned and questioned what was happening to no avail. In a bit to keep moving while complaining, as a remedial measure, a temporal plank bridge was later attached nearby, an initiative of the quarter inhabitants though only for bikes and pedestrians. Incidences of riders missing track on the planks and falling into the shallow stream beneath were recurrent. The distance for cars became longer as they could only meander through Mbengbagwa or the Tendoh's to access Kobenyang and Haussa quarter. As such the transport fare charged by bike riders and drivers plying the road doubled.

Hope had been lost but recently rekindled like dry bones rising again after the population was taken aback to see see work resuming on the bridge and minutes after, it became passable at last for cars. Many couldn't believe their eyes and thought they were dreaming. Ndangsa Kennedy Akam, mayor of the Mbengwi council speaking to Rainbow Radio's Anoh Jerome on the Back Mbon Bridge project began by apologising to the beneficiary population for the stress they went through all this while due to the non filling of the two ends of the bridge.

Temporal Remedial Measure that was Improvised by the Quarter Inhabitants
Ndangsa Kennedy Akam, Mayor, Mbengwi Council

He admitted it was like some sought of punishment considering the time work had been completed on the bridge. "It's not really been my fault. You know with the stakes in which we are living, the contractor had a lot of difficulties in penetrating into Mbengwi with a front head loader to get real gravel, that is laterite for the backfilling of the bridge. That had been the major huddle that kept that bridge standing there unused all this while." These were the words of the mayor in the interview he granted on the subject.

He revealed that after discussing with the contractor on a way out, they resolved to do the filling manually using local labour. "The Bambe Union boys took the engagement to backfill and put the bridge into use" disclosed the apologetic mayor who reiterated that it wasn't out of his making. "I am there for you people and I've been making all efforts to see that that bridge is backfilled and put into use" he said. As to his expectations from the users, Ndangsa Kennedy wished maximum use is made of the bridge and it's sustainability guaranteed  by opening up gutters so that rain water runs into the stream and not unto the bridge.

Back Mbon Road Leading to Kobenyang

The Bridge Stayed Like This Without Being Back Filled for Over 7 Months

He also called on the Back Mbon quarter head and the inhabitants of the quarter to organise regular community labour on the entire stretch of the road from Mile 18 to Haussa quarter, Wumfi and Kobenyang. Grass had grown wild on both sides of the road, folding it up coupled with non passage of cars. Now, the mayor expects effective usage by cars especially in transporting produce from the farms to the market, an act that will lead to the widening of the road as it was before. He ended his one on one with Anoh Jerome by appreciating the locals around the bridge for having improvised something temporal for bikes without which the situation would've been worst.

The mayor was speaking on Tuesday August 31st in the comfort of his office and by the next day, Wednesday September 1st 2021, the filling was done by the Bambe Union members. Many inhabitants have been expressing joy with the latest development on the bridge. Madam Leke Guillian, a Back Mbon quarter inhabitant express her joy in singing, that "Finally the Lord has done it finally finally ehhhh". As the back to school season approaches, pupils, students, teachers and parents will not find it difficult again accessing schools like Full Gospel Bilingual Nursery and Primary School, Back Mbon where preparations are intensifying to begin admission for the 2021/2022 academic year.
